In the wide-open terrain of West Texas, PB Materials continues to define what it means to run an efficient, high-output aggregate operation. Based in Odessa, Texas, PB Materials has carved out a reputation for reliability, performance, and adaptability in a demanding industry with the help of their strong partnership with Powerscreen Texas.
At the helm of day-to-day operations in the region is Orlando Chavarin, District Manager and industry veteran with over 28 years of experience under his belt. Orlando’s story with PB Materials started when the company acquired the sand and gravel pit he was operating at back in 2014. He became an operations manager at that very site and has since worked his way up to overseeing multiple locations across Texas. His longevity in the business gives him a unique perspective on how far the equipment and the industry has come. “The equipment has changed and improved drastically,” Orlando shared. “The machines we run now are easier to set up, operate, and maintain. The technology built into them is revolutionary compared to what we were using even a decade ago.”
Powerful Equipment, Big Results
At the core of PB Materials’ current production capabilities is a powerful lineup of equipment. The site utilizes a Cedarapids CRH1113R closed circuit impactor/screener, a Powerscreen Chieftain 1700X inclined screen, and an MGL stacking conveyor to produce a wide range of material efficiently. The combination of these machines helps PB Materials deliver on its impressive annual throughput of over a million tons.
The Cedarapids CRH1113R is the workhorse of the operation, powered by a 450 hp Scania diesel engine and equipped with a TI4250 impact crusher and a 6’ x 16’ two-deck incline screen. With its closed-circuit design and recirculating conveyor, the plant delivers a high-production, low-maintenance solution that maximizes uptime and throughput. Orlando noted that the CRH1113R consistently pushes 300 to 330 tons per hour and likely more if they could keep up with it. “It’s a hungry machine,” he said with a laugh. “It’s producing more than enough, even when it’s being loaded with a 10-ton bucket wheel loader.”
Using the CRH1113R, they’re producing two primary products, MSE and a 1-inch base. With the addition of the Powerscreen Chieftain 1700X, they’re able to refine their output even further. The Chieftain 1700X, known for its mid-sized footprint and high-volume performance, allows them to extract 57 stone and chip base from the 1-inch material. Thanks to its 16’ x 5’ screenbox and quick-change features, the Chieftain plays a crucial role in maintaining high production rates with minimal downtime.
A Production-First Mentality
Orlando takes pride in running a proactive, forward-thinking operation. Roughly 35% of PB Materials’ production supports their own concrete and ready-mix business, with the 65% majority being sold externally to commercial and residential customers across the region. Their best-selling product is 57 stone, widely used in concrete production.
What sets PB Materials apart is their commitment to always staying ahead of the game. Orlando shared that he often runs material and builds stockpiles even before a project is confirmed, just in case they win the bid. That kind of preparation allows PB Materials to say yes immediately when customers need large quantities of material fast. “If there’s a big job we’re going after, I’m already producing the material ahead of time,” Orlando said. “When we get that job, we’re ready. That’s what gives us the edge.”
The team also appreciates how easy the machines are to adjust when switching products. Orlando explained that his operators favor the CRH1113R because they can change screen decks and reconfigure it on the fly. Even small design features, like built-in levels to verify shaker alignment, make a big difference in keeping things running smoothly. “It’s simple, but huge. Being able to glance and know everything is running level makes our jobs a lot easier.”
A Trusted Equipment Partner
Throughout all this growth and success, Powerscreen Texas has remained a trusted partner, with Stephen Devane, their Sales Representative, playing a key role in PB Materials’ equipment decisions. Orlando praised Stephen’s in-depth knowledge and long-standing relationship with the team. “He’s been great to work with,” Orlando said. “Stephen understands exactly what machines we need and how they’re going to help us meet our goals. I’ve been working with him for years, and he’s always had our best interest in mind.”
Whether it’s selecting the right machine, troubleshooting performance, or securing parts in a hurry, PB Materials knows they can rely on Powerscreen Texas to support them. In an industry where every hour of downtime can cost thousands, that kind of service is invaluable.
Ready for What’s Next
With cutting-edge equipment, an experienced team, and a mindset geared toward preparation and performance, PB Materials continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in their market. Their ability to deliver high-quality materials at scale, whether for their own concrete operations or external clients, is a direct result of the powerful machines they operate and the forward-thinking leadership of industry veterans like Orlando Chavarin. “Our machines are doing more than we even expected,” Orlando said. “We’re not just keeping up with demand, we’re staying ahead of it.”
